Geek post!

Fair warning, the following entry is about the forthcoming Spiderman 3 movie. If you ain't interested, don't read it.



Straight from the mouth of Mary Jane herself (and honestly, what better place is there to be from...or in...or near...) Kirsten Dunst confirmed yesterday that the two chief villains in Spider-Man 3 will be Sandman and Venom. They will be played respectively by Thomas Haden Church and Topher Grace.

yeah, I know. Best I can think of is that they're going for a sort of "evil Peter Parker" thing. Like what would happen if the geek who got superpowers was raised by an abusive father instead of by a kind aunt and uncle. I suppose this changes the physiology of the character, but it still works with the psychology of the character (Eddie wasn't truly evil until he was taken over by the symbiote, he was just mean.) I'm curious as to where the symbiote is gonna come from, though. Unless Sony has some top-secret plans to put out a Secret War movie (which they totally should,) they're going to have to change that around a bit.

On the other hand, if Spidey calls Venom a dumbass, I will fall out of my chair laughing.

there's plenty of roles that Kurtwood Smith could play that would save Spidey from having to sink to the low-wit comment of "dumbass."

maybe topher isn't donning the suit, but maybe they're just using his voice.

i don't think they'd actually try to fit him into the suit...it'd be all loose and frumpy, like a little boy playing in daddy's clothes.

I've read he was "bulking up" for his role in Spider-man. This was before I knew what his role was. That boy's gonna have to bulk himself up about a foot taller and a second Topher wider, to really look the part. Who knows though, Toby looked all buff in his spidey jammies, maybe Toher will too. Plus, most of the actual "Venom" stuff would be CGI, I'd imagine, he jsut needs to look the part as Brock.

But, but...what about Oswald finding his dad's suit and green goblin setup? What about Hobgoblin, or the return of Green Goblin? Even Sandman I could see (sinister 6 and all that--hired by JJJ and Oswald to get Spidey), but Brock? WTF?

I actually don't mind Topher, only because of the good/bad geek piece. They'll probably do it as some dumb 'gov't secret project' or 'alien grants Topher ability to beat up spidey' or 'Oscorp's latest wackjob invention--psycho suit!!!One!'. Meh. I wanted whatshername as Black Cat.

On the other hand, a Secret Wars movie would be cool, just because I want to see them CG riding the city of Denver home.

I think he's in it too. He'll be the hobgoblin, though. I was just talking about the new bad guys, and of course this is all tentative, so it could change in the cutting room.

I almost don't care that Foreplay is Venom.

I just can't wait to see Venom.

Venom was my favorite Spidey character ever. Ever!! It would be neat if Carnage showed up too.

I don't know much about Sandman though, what is he about?

And what happened to the Hobgoblin? Hello crazy son of a crazy man???

I think this was strictly info on the new villans. As I understand it, Harry will become the hobgoblin (a slight departure, but if they put him in a better costume, I'll be happy.)
